Puppets

Shadow Puppet Theatre has built many different
kinds of puppets to augment the troupe that
originally approached us in 2005. Below are some
examples of what we do.

“The Witches”
Macbeth Act Iv Scene 1
2006
Hand and rod Shadow Puppets
Mat F. Kelly and Vic Thepmontry

These Puppets were built for Shadow Puppet
Theatre’s Macbeth. They are made of Paper Mache,
wire and rod and are about 1ft in height. Their three
dimensional design allows the Shadows to turn around
in full view of the audience, something that is more
difficult with traditional Shadow Puppets. It also
allows the Shadows to face the audience (3/4 front) to
perform asides and to address the audience as is
sometimes required while performing Shakespeare.

Fall Fling, 2007
Traditional Shadow Puppets
Mat F. Kelly with Arlene R. Thomas

These Puppets were designed
for the production “The Moon” which
was produced for fall fling, a benefit gala
for the MS Society of Canada. They are a
more traditional two dimensional design
and measure about 9cm or 10cm in
height. They are positioned on the screen
of an overhead projector.

This show has a cast of only
four main characters, but requires that
each character has four duplicates for a
total of 16 puppets for the main
characters alone. This is to facilitate
quick transitions between scenes.

The puppets shown in the
images at bottom left and the top right are
essentially finger puppets with each
puppet being placed on one of the actors
four fingers. The puppets shown on the
bottom right are built into the set but have
moveable arms, and in the case of the
deity (red figure in the sky), a movable
mouth. The arms are controlled by a short
stick with a small rubber ball on the end
of it.

Cannamore Orchard Spooky Wagon Ride,
2007
Mat F. Kelly

These puppets were designed for
Cannamore Orchard’s annual spooky
wagon ride. They are several feet tall
and are not Shadow Puppets, but rather a
demonstration of some of the other types
of puppet work undertaken by Shadow
Puppet Theatre. They are made of paper
mache, wire and cloth and are normally
viewed in half light during the spooky
wagon ride.
